The Summer School is linking theoretical with experiential knowledge, combining  speech, imaging and vivid stimuli into a single whole: History – Culture – Tradition.

Through this program, students will get to know Crete, which has been inhabited since Neolithic times ( ~ 6000 BC ), with the installation of the first residents at Knossos, where one of the greatest civilizations was developed: the Minoan civilization ( ~ 3500-3000 BC ). Participants will walk in the palaces of Knossos and the galleries of the Labyrinth, will explore Dikteon Andron cave (where Zeus, the father of the Olympian gods, was born) and visit the Ideon Andron cave where he was later raised. According to Homer, king Minos ascended to the sanctuary of Ideon Andron every nine years to get laws to govern from God, and resided in Zominthos. Students will also visit the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum in village Myrtle Heraklion, birthplace of Nikos Kazantzakis, one of the most important contemporary Greek writers, and most translated worldwide, who became even more famous through the film adaption of his works: Christ Recrucified, Life and Times of Alexis Zorba and The Last Temptation.

Students will have the opportunity to cross walk the Samaria Gorge, a natural monument in the southern part of the prefecture of Chania and the longest gorge in Europe (18 km ).

Participants will get to know the diet of Crete, the standard for the Mediterranean diet, through a seminar in Cretan cooking, guided visits and participations in traditional product manufacturing workshops (such as bread, olive oil, dairy, wine, etc.) and will experience a Cretan wedding & baptism, accompanied with traditional Cretan music and dancing.

An optional basic Greek language course will take place, introducing students to the most widely spoken language in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe, due to the large number of colonies founded by the Greeks on the Mediterranean coast which made it to be the language of commerce.

The aim of this Summer School is for the Chinese students to become partakers of History, Culture and Tradition, aiming to launch an ongoing dialogue between the two largest and oldest civilizations of the world: Chinese and Greek. Cultures who developed almost parallel at all levels and have infinite elements in common.

A detailed program will be released 15 days prior to student’s arrival in Crete.

Upon successful completion of this program,
